2010 Bollywood Predictions

Here’s my brief take on 2010 releases in the first half:

“Pyaar Impossible” (08th Jan): Sure flop. It’s anybody’s guess that casting Uday Chopra in any role other than the chatty mechanic he played in Dhoom would be a flop. Priyanka Chopra is a great star wasting her talent in a movie that would bomb badly.

“Dulha Mil Gaya” (08th Jan): Badly Routed. It may have Shah Rukh Khan and other second rung stars like Sushmita Sen and Fardeen Khan. No signs of this getting lucky.

“Red Alert - The War Within” Releasing 15th Jan: Flop. Well, which was the last Suniel Shetty movie that worked well? And a B-grade Sameera Reddy? Forget this!

“Chance Pe Dance” releasing 15th Jan: Can Work: Audience suffering from poorer choices around will give this Shahid Kapoor – Genelia Starrer a thumbs up. No matter what its quality would be, it would score over its rivals releasing that week.

“Veer” releasing 22nd Jan: Will recover its bucks. Imagine Salman Khan wrote the script a long time ago and adjusted it to the current circumstances. Though I don’t think the movie would have much to say, I’m sure it’ll do well among his loyal fans.

“Rann” releasing 22nd Jan: May Work. Senior Bachchan has already created waves for shooting a 13 minute long sequence without re-take. No wonder what his abilities are, it comes with the unpredictability of the ‘Ram Gopal Verma’ tag. Since it targets issues and has a good cast including Ritesh Deshmukh & Paresh Rawal, it may work

“Road to Sangam” releasing 22nd Jan: Critics Only. While Paresh Rawal starrer Rann may work, this one with Om Puri in the cast will possibly work well among critics. As it appears, it’s a movie of the hackneyed ‘unity in diversity’ theme.

“Prince” releasing 29th Jan: Super-flop. Vivek Oberoi cannot really carry a movie all by himself and there are none others here that can either! Absolute waste of budget!

“Teen Patti” releasing 12th Feb, Can work! It may not set the BO on fire, but Amitabh Bachchan, Ben Kingsley and R Madhavan are respectable names for delivering hits.

“My Name Is Khan” releasing 12th Feb. Will Work! The most popular screen couple Shahrukh Khan and Kajol is together again as Karan Johar dons the director’s hat. Forget the gyan that it may offer, it will set the BO on fire in India and Abroad.

“Road, Movie” releasing Feb 26th. Arty stuff that Will Surely Work! Well received at the Toronto International Film Festival, this stars Abhay Deol starrer and is directed by Shyam Benegal’s nephew Dev Benegal. Also starring Tannishtha Chatterjee & Satish Kaushik it deals with a touring cinema in the desert. Watch out for this one!

“Athithi Tum Kab Jaaoge” releasing Feb 26th, Low Chance! Starring Ajay Devgn, Konkana Sen Sharma and Paresh Rawal, the story is about an unwanted distant relative. You may bet your money on Paresh Rawal, but I won’t give it a chance.

“Kites” awaited for April 16th, Will Work. This Hrithik Roshan, Kangana Ranaut and Barbara Mori starrer Romance / Action / Thriller directed by Anurag Basu has already made news for its alleged romances. But Hrithik Factor will make it tick.

“Raajneeti” releasing May 25th, Definite Hit. Katrina works best at the BO. When you have her cast as a great looking saree-clad politician, brace yourself for a big hit. Also starring are Ajay Devgan, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Viviek Oberoi, Arjun Rampal and is political drama directed by Prakash Jha of ‘Gangajal’ & ‘Apaharan’ fame.

“Raavan” clashing with Raajneeti on May 25th; Will Work! This one stars Abhishek as the modern day Raavan with ageing damsel Aishwarya Rai as Sita and Govinda as Hanuman. Coming with the ‘Mani Ratnam’ tag, it has sure chances of success.
